BONSAI ART



Art of bonsai obtain the style that appeared in bonsai characters. There are many different styles of bonsai which have been developed over the centuries. Although the definitions of these styles are quite precise they are only intended to be guidlines which should be interpreted by the individual bonsai grower to create an original and aesthetically pleasing result.

Some of the most common styles are shown below. Each style has been named but the definitions have not been included since the images should speak for themselves.

Chokkan

Formal Upright

Strong,vertical trunk with pyramidal
arrangement of branches stretching uniformly in all direction except forwards.



Moyogi

Curved Informal Upright

Trunks winds round in curves that become smaller towards the top.



Shakan
Slanting Style

Shakan has branch growing in all directions.Strong roots are exposed in the direction of incline.



Han-Kengai
Semi Cascade

This style does not cascade downwards from a rock,but just out horizontally above a cliff.



Kengai
Cascade Or Hanging Style

Trunk and branches hang down over the edge of a pot, usually one that has been placed high up.



Sokan
Twin Trunk

Two trunks of differing thickness growing out of one root( father and son ).



Sankan
Triple Trunk

Three trunks of differing thickness growing out of one root( father,mother and son ).



Kabudachi
Clump

The term used for all bonsai where several trunks growth from the root.



Ikada
Raft Style

Trunk bured horizontally in the ground with branches trained to give the effect of individual trees.



Netsuranari
Raft from Root,or Sinuous Style

Several trunks growing from a root lying horizontally,producing the effect of a group of trees.



Yose-ue
Multi-tree or Groupinng Planting

Several miniature tree or greatly differing ages planted in a flat dish to give the appearance of a wood or forest glade.



Hokidachi
Broom,or Besom Style

Fan-Shaped branches on and upright trunk to look like a giant broom.



Fukinagashi
Windswept Style

Trunk at angle with branches and twigs growing only in one direction-as if lashed by the wind.



Bunjingi
Literati Style

Trunk or trunks growing upright or aat a slight incline with no branhces except at the top.An elegant shape.



Ishitsuki
Clinging-to-rock, or Rock Grown Style

Miniature tree growing above or on a rock,its roots firmly clasping the stone and reaching down into the richness of the soil.
